Crowns
The main aim of restorative dentistry is to rehabilitate damaged teeth so that they are healthy and functional again. It’s not only about aesthetics. A sparkling white tooth means nothing if it’s not in harmony with the rest of the dental arch.
Our team at Epic Smiles believes that a dental crown is an excellent restorative alternative if what brings the patient to the office is more than a cosmetic issue.
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown, commonly known as “cap,” is a fixed dental restoration that covers the visible portion of the affected tooth (also named tooth crown). Crowns are made out of porcelain, a very esthetic material that imitates the natural appeal of tooth enamel, and can be manufactured in the same shape, size, and color of the original tooth.
Apart from having excellent cosmetic results, these restorations also strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure from further damage. That’s why they are the best choice for severely damaged teeth.
When might I need a dental crown:
What happens during the placement of a dental crown?
Once both our team at Epic Smiles and the patient choose dental crowns to restore the affected teeth, the treatment begins. First, our dentist removes the damaged tissue of the teeth and gives the remaining structure a convenient shape. After that, he takes a precise impression, which is sent to the dental laboratory together with some details about the shade of the smile. The lab uses the impression to create the restoration and sends back to our office a custom-made crown.

Taking care of my dental crown
To extend the longevity of dental crowns (and any other dental restoration), patients need to pay special attention to the hygiene of the area. This includes a meticulous brushing and flossing routine, and regular visits to our office for evaluations.

Veneers
Getting the smile you had always wanted is not as difficult or costly as you might have thought. In many cases, a professional teeth whitening treatment is more than enough to get rid of those teeth stains or discolorations you have always been self-conscious about. But if your concerns are others, like gaps, chips, or cracks, or if the discoloration is too severe, you might find your solution in porcelain veneers.
What porcelain veneers can correct
Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-color shells that cover the front of the tooth. Being made of porcelain, a material that closely mimics the enamel’s aspect, veneers naturally enhance almost any smile. Veneers hide common imperfections and have great results in teeth with issues like:
Why choose porcelain veneers?
With porcelain veneers, you can have the smile you have always dreamed about in just two visits to our office. These porcelain shells have several advantages, as they:
How are porcelain veneers made and placed?
In the first visit, our dentist at Epic Smile evaluates if the patient is suitable for rehabilitation with dental veneers. Then, if the treatment is viable, the patient will explain his or her expectations. Together, they will talk about the size, color, and shape of the future veneers.
After that, the procedure gets started. The dentist removes a very thin layer of the outer enamel and takes an impression that is sent to the dental laboratory with the specific requirements that have been previously discussed. It may take some time until the final restorations are ready, but in the meantime, the patient can wear temporary veneers.
In the next visit, the dentist bonds the final veneers and checks that the result meets the patient’s expectation. Most patients will have the treatment completed in only those two sessions!

Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is one of the most-desired cosmetic treatments. And it is not hard to figure out why: a bright smile enhances the general appearance and helps a lot in first impressions.
There are countless whitening products available in drugstores and even online. Still, many people come to our office after trying these over-the-counter products (such as strips, pens, toothpaste, and kits) looking for more impressive results.
There are several reasons why over the counter treatments don’t have the same effect as dentist-prescribed ones. Firstly, the products used in the dental office, or under the supervision of a dentist, have a higher concentration of the whitening agent, which delivers faster and more dramatic results.
Moreover, not all cases are to be treated in the same way. Most people know that teeth get stained easily by external factors like cigarettes, coffee, tea, and wine. But what they don’t bear in mind is that other factors, such as trauma, root canal treatments, aging, or the use of some medicine, can also alter the normal shade of their smile. Over the counter products will never have the same (if any) results in those situations. That’s why it is essential to consult a professional before making a decision.

Which method is right for me?
There is not an ideal treatment: each smile is unique. And at Epic Smiles, we are well-aware of that. We want to guide our patients and talk about the different alternatives, giving them enough information to build their judgment and make their own decisions. At the end of the day, the election will depend on the patient’s budget and needs.
